Every year, on October 29, the city of Girona celebrates the feast of Sant Narcís, patron of it. Why the Sant Narcís? Here we tell you the legend.
Legend has it that in 1285 the French army arrived in the city to attack it, and to prevent this the inhabitants of Girona closed the gates of the wall in order to defend themselves from the French from there. The French were not able to conquer the city, so they began to occupy the neighborhoods that were outside the wall. At that time, the Esglèsia de Sant Fèlix, where the remains of Sant Narcís rested, was outside the city limits, and the French army conquered it and it was occupied as a military barracks.
The soldiers of the French army wanted to discourage the enemy by scattering the remains of Sant Narcís through the streets, but a carpenter saw it, collected the remains and kept them in a box. Later that day, flies the size of an acorn began to emerge from the box, blue-green in color and with heads shaped like a stinger. The great cloud of flies made its way towards the French army camp and attacked them with its stingers. The French were crying and screaming in fear. In the end the army fell back, and that was how France lost the siege of Girona.
The legend also tells that every time the inhabitants of Girona felt attacked, they took the tomb of Sant Narcís to the walls to defend the city with their army of flies.

On this day every October 29 and all the following weekend in Gerona the Sant Narcís Fair is celebrated - it is the city's main festival, one of the latest in all of Catalonia. The people of Girona say that the Sant Narcís fair marks the arrival of the cold, it is time to remove your jacket and thick socks from the bottom of the closet and warm your hands with a piece of roasted chestnuts or a good wood-fired sweet potato. Taking advantage of the fact that the Sant Narcís Fairs always proceed with the All Saints festival, they are extended by 10 days (which include 2 weekends), in which the city is filled with music, stalls, attractions, cultural events, etc.
