Magnificently located between the arms of the river that crosses it and crosses it’s many channels, through which picturesque bridges and pedestrian crossings are launched, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue or "Rural Venice" has a special and unique charm.
Formerly, this place, where one of the most picturesque Provençal towns now stands, L'Isle - sur - la - Sorgue, was a swampy area with an unhealthy and harmful climate. Several families of fishermen settled here who, to improve living conditions, drained these lands with the help of drainage channels. These fishermen enjoyed exclusive fishing rights in the waters of Sorga, from its origins to the Rhone. Over time, this nucleus, originally called Saint Lauren, was fortified to repel the incursions of armed gangs of thieves that roamed the area. But today there is nothing left of the fortress wall.
This place has become a mecca for antiques and junk dealers. Its shops form entire galleries, hidden in courtyards and whose existence you do not even suspect! For more than forty years, twice a year, from April 22 to 25 and from August 12 to 15, the city hosts the Antique Fair and the ISLS Market, an international antique fair. During this time, it went from being a small flea market to one of the largest antique trading sites after Paris and London. Here you can find cutlery, antique weapons, postcards, crystals, lamps, toys, bedding, clocks, ceramics, sculptures and much, much more. In the neighborhood, you will see shops that offer Provençal crafts: aromatic herbs, lavender and honey, hand soap and essential oils...
The most interesting building in the city is undoubtedly the Notre-Dame-des-Ange cathedral church, a true treasure of Provençal Baroque. It was rebuilt in 1645 from an old church dating from 1222, founded by the Bishop of Cavaillon. Overall, L'Ile-sur-la Sorgue still preserves little-known treasures, such as the massive medieval Silver Tower that towers over the market square, the Chapel of the Penitents in White, built in 1562, and the Chapel of the Penitents of Azul, erected three years later, the Chapel of the Ursinos and the Chapel of the male congregation of the seventeenth century.
